Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Critically analyse, evaluate and present a work of art according to a theory/philosophy of art.

• Review and critically analyse different scholarly views of theories, models and methods of creativity.

• Apply a creative process in producing a work of art.

• Synthesise and communicate various definitions and theories of art from an historical and contemporary perspective.

Unit Description

In this unit students will be introduced to how the visual arts can be viewed and engaged with in light of the philosophies and frameworks of Christian thought and spirituality. Students will combine analytical thinking about creativity, the visual arts and spirituality with practically developing their own creative process and exploring art making practices. Students will develop a journal of their own work with some in-class workshops and activities forming the basis for this process. This practice provides an important foundation for further study in the visual art stream. Covered content includes: exploring what art is - especially in relation to the visual arts; how the Bible refers to the arts; the reformed and sacramental theology of the arts and a historical survey of the visual arts.
