On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Select and apply different critical methods used in interpretation of the Old Testament.
Integrate Old Testament exegesis into contemporary settings autonomously and in collaboration with others.
Outline how selected Old Testament passages contribute to major theological themes.
Use scholarly principles to study and exegete passages from the Old Testament.
Integrate insights gained from analyzing the Old Testament passage(s) with previously acquired theological knowledge.
This subject will build on the skills and knowledge gained from the subjects BB524.306 Introduction to the Bible and BB502.306 Old Testament Introduction. The subject will broaden the abilities of the student to exegete the English translation of the Hebrew text.
Emphasis is placed upon investigating Old Testament historical, cultural, literary and theological contexts. Hermeneutical questions and principles are itemised, discussed and applied in practice to different biblical genres in the Old Testament. The appropriate biblical criticisms for the chosen genres will be examined, critiqued and then utilised.
Particular attention will be given to the exegesis of significant portions of at least one Old Testament book.
The theological implications of the chosen texts and broader contexts will be examined. This context shall also include contemporary application.
Teaching strategies include lectures, tutorials, weekend schools and presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, OHP, DVD, video and audio tape and on-line interaction. Students also learn by class discussion, personal study, preparation of assignments and assessment comments on their work.
