Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Identify an appropriate area of study and argue its significance.

• Plan and produce a systematic study involving unbiased observations, and data gathering, analysing and interpretation.

• Discuss and analyse the counselling practice applications of the area that was the focus of study in this unit.

• Produce a clear and concise research paper according to accepted conventions in the discipline that analyses and synthesises the findings.

Unit Description

This unit is designed to enable the learner to pursue an area of study or research relevant to counselling, current and approved by the Course Co-Ordinator that is not covered in the curriculum. The unit is likely to consist of a customised learning experience for a learner who wishes to gain an in-depth knowledge and expertise beyond what is offered in core and elective units of the course. The learner may also be a participant in a cohort group undertaking a larger research study under the supervision of an academic with recognised expertise in the chosen area. Areas of study that may be included in this unit may either focus on counselling theories and therapeutic models not otherwise covered in the unit, or research inquiries in the area of counselling assessment and components of efficacy research.

Teaching Strategies

Students will learn through a consultative education process involving independent research under the guidance of a supervisor who is suitably qualified and experienced in the area of study, and online interaction.
