On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Plan and organise lesson scope and sequence for Primary Health and Physical Education according to appropriate content, student learning needs, effective teaching strategies and integrating relevant aspects of literacy, numeracy and Christian perspectives
Communicate broad knowledge of the structure and substance of Health and Physical Education appropriate to the students’ learning needs.
Analyse and evaluate integrated curriculum strategies and assessment for the primary years of schooling appropriate to Health and Physical Education
Analyse and interpret student needs, and develop and evaluate strategies for teaching Health and Physical Education
Incorporate ICT into the planning and teaching of Health and Physical Education appropriate to the learning and teaching context.
Compare Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Christian perspectives on Health and Physical Education content and pedagogies.
Through this unit students will examine the current context for Health and Physical Education (HPE) in primary schooling, including agendas and perspectives that impact on the content and objectives of the HPE curriculum and the teaching of HPE; young people in the current context; the perspectives and needs of diverse learners, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; and Christian perspectives on the discipline.
The unit covers the growth and development of young people and how movement skills are developed, as well as diverse learner needs and strategies for responding to them in order to develop inclusive HPE programs. The unit engages with current curriculum and how to plan programs for physical education and health education, both classroom based and whole school health programs, that are appropriate to the physical, cognitive and affective development and learning needs of students. Through the unit students will examine a range of approaches to teaching HPE and will develop units of work and lesson sequences. The unit will cover a range of teaching and communication strategies, diagnostic, formative and summative assessment practices, as well as strategies for organising and managing physical education lessons. Strategies for appropriate and effective integration of ICT for teaching and learning in HPE are also covered through the unit, along with a focus on developing students’ literacy and numeracy needs relevant to HPE.
This unit also addresses the self-care needs and professional development of HPE teachers.

This unit may be available in different modes of delivery i.e. online and face-to-face as listed above. The unit content will not differ between these modes of delivery. There will possibly be a difference in the schedule and/or the prescribed assessment tasks, however both will cover and assess the same content.
