Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Unit Description

Exploration of key principles and processes of transfer primer development for a literacy project for emerging literates based on the examination and evaluation of various literacy theories and instructional materials. Examination of the development of appropriate training programs for literacy tutors including workshop development principles, tutor education activities and formative assessment practices. Exploration of varieties of supplementary literacy materials and activities that are suitable for different ages and genders of the emerging literates in minority languages. Discussion of curriculum planning and development issues including principles of curriculum design and integration.

Teaching Strategies

A variety of teaching methods/strategies will be used: face to face lecture sessions including discussions, case studies, group learning, reports, videos, overt instruction and PowerPoint; tutorials and lab sessions based upon simulated or real situations; guided reading; demonstrations.

The unit is also available on CD-Rom for self-directed or distance learning.
