Unit Description

This subject builds on the attitudes, skills and knowledge gained in LN121.312 Introduction to Language Learning and Linguistics and various level 2 subjects. Through intensive work with a speaker of another language in a simulated fieldwork situation, students develop further skills in monolingual and bilingual language learning and elicitation techniques, in order to obtain natural, accurate and appropriate language data for a variety of purposes. They will be able to accurately record language data in both written and electronic forms, to a standard suitable for language documentation and permanent archiving. They will have a basic understanding of the use of computer software in the management of linguistic data. They will understand the ethics of fieldwork and be prepared to conduct applied linguistic fieldwork with little or no on-site supervision, but with consultant help available. As major component of this subject, students work throughout the semester in a simulated field language learning/data collection situation.

Teaching Strategies

Lectures, discussions, presentations by visiting speakers who are currently involved in linguistic fieldwork and computing tutorials. 20-24 hours in mentored student-directed language learning and data elicitation sessions interacting with a language resource person (LRP) in small groups. Regular supervision and consultation with a Field Methods staff member
