Unit Description

This course of study examines the use of language in Australia and how it relates to notions of a national community. The unit aims to introduce some of the major literary figures in Australian literature, but also non-imaginative writings, such as a Prime Minister’s speech or a document of continental exploration. Australia is a young nation whose literature has been shaped by English and American traditions, and also by indigenous and non-English speaking sources. The unit explores some of the major themes of Australian nationhood such as immigration, mateship, the tyranny of distance, and the bush.
