Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Apply key principles in developing literacy materials for emergent intermediate and advanced literacy students.
Identify and critique the underpinning reading theories incorporated in a variety of instructional materials.
Develop an integrated curriculum following the principles of curriculum development and integration.
Develop a transfer primer following key principles of primer construction and suitable for a chosen target group
Plan a literacy tutors’ program, including evaluation tools
Unit Description
This unit focuses on developing and applying practical skills used in the design and development of literacy related materials and curricula for literacy programs in minority language contexts. The development and application of the skills is strongly linked to the following well established phases and principles:
1) The phases of literacy development and the variety of materials that need to be developed to support literacy acquisition for emerging literates (both adult and child) in minority language communities.
2) Principles of integrated curriculum design for elementary literacy programs.
3) Key principles of transfer primer development – helping people transfer existing literacy skills to another language that they speak.
4) The components of appropriate training programs for literacy tutors, workshop development principles and assessment practices.
Teaching Strategies
A variety of teaching methods/strategies will be used: face to face lecture sessions including discussions, case studies, group learning, reports, videos, overt instruction and PowerPoint; tutorials and lab sessions based upon simulated or real situations; guided reading; demonstrations.
