Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Discuss the systemic and cultural nature of organizational life, health, dysfunction and conflict in terms of the grids of general systems theory, organizational culture, organizational psycho-dynamics, polarity and family systems theory

• Sympathetically evaluate the ethical and theological implications of the essential elements of various grids for organizational analysis and theologise regarding God’s presence in organizational situations.

• Conduct an in depth analysis of an organizational culture or recurring patterns of member inter-relating utilizing a range of grids informed by various theories of organizational reality.

• Develop recommendations for the direction of organizational change or articulate organizational learning.

Unit Description

This unit is designed to supply candidates with a range of interpretive grids to assist in discerning and responding to the systemic, semi-conscious or irrational aspects of organisational life that can detract or assist in the fulfillment of organisational purposes.

Topics developed would include:

• An introduction to general systems thinking and organisational time-lines
• Organisational culture, the concept and diagnostics,
• Family systems theory; differentiation and fusion as systemic reality,
• Conflict levels and anxiety management,
• Psycho-dynamics and organizational neuroses,
• Charisma, narcissism and ethical leadership,
• Polarity Theory,
• Theological underpinnings of ecclesial change.
