Unit Description

This unit considers the Old and New Testaments from within the discipline of biblical theology of mission, emphasis is placed upon the themes of the missio Dei and the kingdom of God.

The Old Testament section commences with a study of Genesis 1-11. Abraham and the issues of election, promise, covenant and the mission Dei are examined. The Exodus and issues raised by Israel’s interaction with the surrounding nations are considered. The Old Testament history is outlined with particular significance given to the key events, major themes and insights related to mission. Issues of poverty, oppression, injustice, liberation and the messianic hope are reflected upon with particular focus given to the Exodus and the prophets. The mission in the exile and the Old Testament preparation for mission in the New Testament are reflected upon.

The New Testament section begins with Jesus’s mission and the Kingdom of God. Special attention is given to Luke 4 and Matthew 28. Mission in the four Gospels is explored. The mission of the early church is focused upon in relation to Pentecost and mission in Acts. Paul’s theology of mission and his approach to mission strategising are considered. Particular emphasis is placed upon Paul’s understanding of mission in Romans, also mission in Hebrews, the General Epistles and Revelation are also reflected upon.

Throughout this unit insights from biblical theology of mission are applied to the students own mission context and to a variety of contemporary mission issues.

Teaching Strategies

Teaching strategies include lectures, tutorials, weekend schools and presentation of instructional material in the form of printed documentation, OHP, DVD, video and audio tape and online interaction. Students also learn by class discussions, personal study, preparation of assignments and assessment comments on their work.
