On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:
Apply theories of learning and knowledge of local learning systems to training programs.
Plan a language development project for a particular context.
Plan and deliver training as a team for a cross-cultural situation.
Critically analyse a situation and develop socially and culturally appropriate training solutions which cater for trainees’ learning styles.
This subject examines cross-cultural training issues and different approaches to training that empower community representatives to work as equal partners in language development work. By the end of the subject students should have an understanding of the different ways people learn and how learning can be facilitated in other cultural contexts. Students will develop practical skills in conducting a needs assessment, planning a training program, lesson planning, assessment and program evaluation. They will be introduced to basic principles of teamwork, leadership and mentoring in intercultural contexts. An emphasis is placed on developing a collaborative approach that establishes local ownership and management of projects.
Teaching methods/strategies used in this unit include:
- teaching sessions which include lectures, tutorials, demonstrations, case studies, videos
- consultations on assessment tasks
- weekly reading relevant to the topics covered and/or Library research
- a four-day intensive on Language Program Design and Management
