Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Critique theories relating to the study and assessment of personality and personality disorder including theological critique.

• Analyse and evaluate case material and apply personality theory and knowledge of personality disorders to therapeutic considerations.

• Elicit, analyse and synthesise information about personality and personality disorders in order to make an accurate DSM 5 axis 2 diagnosis

Unit Description

The unit examines the nature of personality, personality theories and personality disorders and their development and assessment. Biological, psychodynamic, interpersonal, cognitive, trait and integrative perspectives are studied with a particular interest in understanding personality patterns and disorders and exploring the applications to the therapeutic effectiveness of the counsellor. The complexity of classification and the healthy variants of traditional personality styles and personality disorders are explored and reflected upon from different perspectives, including theological.
