Unit Description

This unit provides an overview and critique of Australian culture and society inasmuch as it impacts the adolescent experience.

Students will explore the interactions of various elements of youth culture and begin to identify how these are influenced by broader socio-cultural movements/dynamics. Such movements may include: post-modernism, colonialism, consumerism, social class as well as the influence of technology, media, social media and marketing. Attention will also be given to indigenous and multicultural matters in order to prepare students to engage with young people from various backgrounds and begin development of a framework of cultural competency.

The unit will also investigate how a young person’s life is influenced by the social contexts in which they develop. A variety of dynamics can be explored including: ethnicity, family, peers, education, workplace, leisure, sexuality and intimate relationships and so on. Youth wellbeing and vulnerability will also be considered as these are related to the dynamics of these social contexts.
