On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

Unit Description

This unit develops a student’s effective professional practice, particularly with a view to working within a collegial/agency setting. The policy, legislative and code of practice frameworks that shape contemporary professional youth work in Australia are explored towards developing sound practice responses to a variety of situations.

Students will be introduced to a variety of workplace responsibilities, practice skills and supervisory instruments that are generally expected of youth workers. Case work and case management will be particularly discussed in terms of policy frameworks, case work planning, decision-making, termination and post support issues that can arise.

Other practices explored by this unit may include:

A critical appreciation of the vulnerabilities associated with the helping professions, particularly youth work will be developed as students are encouraged to engage in practices of self-awareness, self-care and stress-management. Together these practices combine towards developing the student’s critically engaged reflective-practice.
