Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, the student will be able to:

• Critically evaluate the skills required for relationship-based youth work and group work practice.

• Apply youth work skills that respond to social, cultural and economic diversity in a flexible and effective manner.

• Examine the legal, ethical, health and safety responsibilities of these practices.

• Generate a justifiable and practical philosophy of youth work with specific practices.

Unit Description

This unit focuses on the specific skills that may be utilised in face-to-face youth work - particularly group work. These practices will introduced and/or others reviewed in greater depth according to the needs of differing practice settings such as statutory services, schooling systems, non-Government organisations and local government.

Students will grow in their proficiency in such skills including an appreciative awareness of the legal, ethical, health and safety responsibilities that are required by the practice setting. The dynamics and implications of differing social, cultural and economic contexts will be explored with a view to adjusting practices sympathetically. Students will also appreciate how these practices are connected to and give expression to the various philosophical and value frameworks they have been exploring.

Skills and practices that may be addressed by this unit include:

• Connecting with Young People/ Adult-wary youth

• Basic Counselling Skills

• Motivating for Change

• Small group dynamics and facilitation

• Planning and implementing activities that promote learning - i.e. Activity Based Learning

• Debriefing young people’s learning experiences

• Introductory assessment practices

• Working with challenging / violent young people

• Introductory case management skills

• De-escalation

• Assessment and management of risk.
